What is Skin Lesion Excision?
This is a broad term that includes removal of abnormal growths on or under the skin, including moles, cysts, benign masses (such as lipomas), suspicious lesions, or skin cancer. Many physicians are qualified to excise skin lesions, however, patients may trust a plastic surgeon to optimize the appearance of the resulting scar.
Why Consider Skin Lesion Excision?
- Diagnosis: Removing a suspicious lesion allows the tissue to be sent to pathology, where information about the benign vs. malignant characteristics can be made.
- Treatment: We work closely with our dermatology colleagues, and with a diagnosis of skin cancer (squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, or melanoma), these lesions can be treated by excising them with appropriate surgical margins.
- Aesthetic Improvement: Patients may be bothered by the attention that skin lesions draw, particularly when they are on the face.
- Relief from Symptoms: Some lesions may cause discomfort, irritation, or other symptoms.
