There are many types of lasers used to improve the discoloration and/or wrinkling of the skin. The first laser used for the skin was the CO2 laser that removed a fair amount of the skin layer, which was good to reduce the wrinkles, but also left the patient to recover with a red face for many months. The other concerns were a demarcation line between the treated and untreated areas and possible hyperpigmentation (dark areas) or hypopigmentation (light areas). Better lasers have been developed, namely erbium lasers and fractionated CO2 lasers. These lasers offer a good compromise between wrinkle and coloration differences of the skin and rapid recovery time. Recovery is typically 3 to 10 days with very nice results.
