What Exactly is a Thigh Lift?
A thigh lift is a surgical procedure designed to recontour the thighs by removing areas of fat and loose skin that are bothersome to patients. The medial (inner portion) thigh is more commonly treated, but the lateral (outer portion) can be addressed as well. The scar location depends on your anatomy – for the inner thighs, it can often be placed at the groin crease. Liposuction is used in combination with a thigh lift and in some cases, liposuction alone may be a reasonable choice.
Am I a Good Candidate for a Thigh Lift?
Surgery is indicated for those that have a moderate or large amount of excess tissue, especially at the inner thigh area. This may result from aging (as skin loses elasticity over time), genetics, or weight loss. Patients often mention that they want to look better in fitted clothing or swimwear. Skin rubbing together can also make physical activity uncomfortable. Diet, exercise, and minimally invasive procedures may not be able to correct these issues. You are a good candidate if you have realistic expectations and are willing to accept the tradeoff of a scar for a more proportional contour of the lower extremity. Ideally you are close to your goal or maintenance weight, which will optimize your surgical result.
Surgical Details
General anesthesia is usually administered and the procedure can take between one and three hours to complete. Liposuction may be performed to contour the thigh. The surgical incisions, depending on your specific anatomy, will be made to remove the excess tissue. The remaining skin is undermined and lifted into position. A surgical drain is typically placed to help reduce fluid accumulation in the early postoperative period. The incisions are closed in multiple layers to minimize tension.
Recovery and Results
A compression garment is used after surgery to reduce swelling. The majority of the recovery lasts about two weeks, but every patient heals at a different pace. Heavy lifting and strenuous activity will be limited over three to four weeks, but you will be able to walk and perform light activity immediately after the procedure. The results of a thigh lift can be noticeable immediately, even with the expected amount of swelling. Combined with a healthy lifestyle, the improvement is expected to be very long-lasting.
