What is Axillary Breast Removal?
Some women have excess tissue in the axillary (armpit) or anterior axillary (in front of the armpit) regions – this is typically present from birth and becomes more prominent with hormonal changes. Patients can be bothered by the appearance of accessory breast tissue, as it may look disproportionate to their frame or may hinder the ability to confidently wear a bra or bathing suit. Beyond the aesthetics, this tissue can occasionally be painful with fluctuations in hormones.
Consultation Process
Dr. Austin Remington or Dr. Brad Remington will listen to your concerns, ask about your medical history, and perform a physical examination to develop a treatment plan. If surgery is deemed to be a good option, the approach is kept as minimally-invasive as possible – in some cases, liposuction alone may be sufficient to improve the contour and symptoms from accessory breast tissue. In other cases, depending on the skin quality or size of the tissue, surgical excision of both the skin and underlying soft tissue may be recommended to optimally smooth the transition at the chest. These treatments can be combined with other procedures such as breast reduction, breast lift (mastopexy), or breast augmentation.
Recovery and Results
Healing from axillary breast removal is relatively straightforward. Treatment with liposuction may involve a few weeks of compression to reduce swelling and skin contraction. If surgical incisions are necessary, they will be closed with absorbable sutures that do not require removal. Heavy lifting and strenuous activity will be restricted for a couple weeks, but full range of motion and light activity will be encouraged shortly after surgery.
